The meeting at Maldon District Council on Wednesday 2nd September was yet another kick in the teeth for rural communities.
 
The split vote by the councillors to approve the Gladman application for 149 dwellings off of Mell Road, and the way it came about leaves a bitter taste in the mouth to say the least.
 
Some Councillors sang the praises of our village, its community spirit, acknowledged the issues with remoteness and lack of infrastructure then went and voted for approval. I think residents throughout the district need to be questioning those councillors loyalty and be challenging their actions.
 
Right across the district rural villages are open to speculative developers. Councillors are running scared rather than standing up for their residents. Maldon District Council should be insisting that the housing targets are revised rather than leaving the mess to the next batch of councillors after the Local Government Reorganisation.
 
The support from Tollesbury residents, Tollesbury Parish Council, Cllr Emma Stephens and Dame Priti Patel our MP, has been phenomenal. We will continue the fight against the ridiculous speculative developers, intent on ruining our landscape and heritage in order to fill their shareholders pockets.
 
Remember Team Tollesbury, we aren’t “NIMBYs”, we are concerned local citizens who witness the failures of their own local healthcare, public transport, and sewage systems on a regular basis.
